apology for beer comment is .. plain stupid.
scott reid, the prime minister's director of communications, criticized the conservatives' plan to give families $1,200 for each child under 6 years old to offset child care costs. basically his comment was, "don't give people $25 a day to blow on beer and popcorn."
there are people who found this pretty offensive because they say the liberals have no faith in the parents' ability to handle money given to them. i personally think scott reid's comment was justified.
i'm not saying that all parents will blow the money, but there are deadbeat parents out there who will spend it on themselves rather than their child. my mum worked with a lady who would complain that she never had enough money to buy her son cough medicine whenever he had a cold, yet the woman would always have smokes handy for her regular smoke breaks. and she was decently paid, so my mum couldn't stand her complaints.
now putting money into daycares may seem like the government would be omitting stay-at-home parents, but they actually aren't. sending kids to daycares/nurseries are becoming more and more popular because of the educational benefits they provide. maybe having easier access to educational nurseries, it could raise the education level of the country? hrmm.. maybe a little far-fetched.

I think its inapprorpriate because I really don't think the Liberals should be talking on how people should be spending their money.
*cough* Adscam *cough*
true, but i understand the point they were trying to make: put the money back into social programs rather than directly to the citizens because you cannot ensure they will use the money for the intended purpose.
Also it's a silly way of doing things in the first place that smells of attempted vote-buying (which they accuse everyone else of). It makes little sense to collect taxes, process them, and then hand back $1200... why not simply offer a large tax break/refund if necessary to the same parents? It would accomplish the same thing and waste less time and money in the process (unless that's what they're doing, but I don't think so...).
I think they don't really want a childcare plan but are doing this as a means of placating those who do. As with several other policies. :P
i know! like the whole gst cut.. yeah, like that's useful to the country as a whole. i think all the economists shouting, "harper, you idiot!" sort of hurt the conservatives.. :)
it would have been to their advantage to dump harper and put in someone like mckay in the leadership position. maybe the conservatives would have had a good chance at winning the election..
True, but I think the key there is someone *like* McKay, rather than actually McKay... because I'm not sure how much the fact that he's a backstabbing bottomfeeder (see: pre-amalgamation PC leadership convention) might be or become well-known enough to hurt his chances...
