drink, drink, drink.. then pass out in a lecture hall

right now there's no student bar on campus at ottawa u. well, there used to be, but they tore down all the walls and turned it into a couch/tv area the year i started there. this wednesday at 4pm, a new student bar is opening. hooray? anyway, the bar has a logo:

what's with the horse? does it look odd to you?

canadian goose

i had an interesting phone call today at work. rather unique because i haven't been asked this question before. "is ottawa full of cultural ghettos?" the woman was calling from florida and currently has her summer home in mississauga. she said that she doesn't like driving for four blocks and seeing only one culture and not a single canadian. wow, can she be any more unpolitically correct? it was interesting talking with her because she kept saying, "i'm not prejudice" (even though i never even hinted at the word when speaking with her).

i actually do understand where she's coming from. personally i wouldn't want to live in an area that's predominantly one culture, but to avoid that would be pretty difficult. i grew up in a caucasian neighbourhood, one cousin in a jewish neighbourhood, another cousin in a east indian neighbourhood, and another in a chinese neighbourhood. i think the closest thing to a mixed area would be a student ghetto.

anyway, i told her ottawa isn't a city that immigrants tend to gravitate towards unless they have family here or a job, which is actually true. i'm actually hoping to meet the woman (because she's planning on coming down to ottawa this weekend or next). i'd just like to see whether she does approach the topic again and if she does, how would she word it. obviously talking about it over the phone is not the same as talking about it in an open space where others can here you.

my aunt is crazy

my dad's work is shipping him off to india for two weeks as of tomorrow. what does that mean for me? clothes of course. but my mum limited me to ONE sari. that's it. one. *sigh* so i gave my dad eight pictures of different saris. well, i have to increase my odds of getting something i like! actually i can trust my dad's taste in saris. he's quite good at buying ones that are pretty fashionable! it's possible that he was a fashionista in a previous life..

anyway, one of my aunts (dad's sister-in-law) asked him to buy a whole bunch of eno from india because it's cheap. ... *slaps forehead* considering my dad's going for two weeks, there's no way he's bringing back a case of eno for my aunt. PLUS you can find it here in canada in any drug stores for pretty cheap. eno in lieu of saris? i don't think so.

wet outside.. wet inside

for lunch i was craving something 'fancy' good today, so i went to a small little restaurant called mama grazzi's kitchen. everytime i've been to this restaurant, i've always been served excellent food. SO FREAKIN' GOOD! very satisfying food indeed.

while taking a sip of water, the bottom of the glass just fell off. all i heard was a *plunk* then water was all over the table. it took me a few seconds just to register what happened. LUCKILY, my purse and treo were on the window sill and not on my table! the server rushed over with napkins to clean up the water. the girl was VERY apologetic; every five seconds was "i'm so sorry!" i guess she felt bad because i had water all over me and my intopia simulation manual. meh, my jeans will dry and i can reprint the manual if i need to. she offered me a new plate of pasta, which i asked her to pack up because that's what i was going to do with my other plate. when she gave me the bill, i was kind of shocked.. she only charged me for my juice and bruschetta, not the pasta. so i gave her a big tip.

there was one lady leaving a table beside me who said, "you should ask for a free meal. things like that shouldn't happen." really, i see it as a fluke. i'm sure there's a reason why that happened - possibly when you fill a glass that's right out of the dishwasher with ice and water, then it cracks? so i wasn't going to make a big deal out of it. anyway, the point of all this is i sort of did my good deed for the day - i gave my pasta to a homeless girl.

wandering aimlessly

my mum picked me up from school tonight because i was there until late and she didn't want me taking the bus at that hour. anyway, while we were driving down the main road near our house, we passed a large snow removal truck.
me: wonder where he's going.
mum: probably looking for some snow..
hello snow.. where are you?

roses stink

i now remember why i dislike roses. the smell. i had the rose the purchaser gave sitting on my desk and it smelled funky. after a couple of hours it was getting pretty annoying. maybe cheap roses smell worse than expensive roses? i'm not sure.. even on mother's day i don't buy mum roses. i wonder if there are any flowers that smell like vanilla.

happy valentine's day!

i actually got a rose today.. from a purchaser. he always tells us the corniest jokes whenever he come in. today, instead of a joke, he wrote us a poem to go along with our roses:
roses to special ladies
who are as beautiful as the petals of a morning daisy!
it is a special day for people like you
for who you are and what you do!!

some people are just plain nice..

i drove to school tonight because i had a group meeting after class and my mum hates the idea of me taking the bus after 9pm. because of the time i had to be at school by, i couldn't park for free on the streets (1 hour limit). so i parked in the parking lot instead; only $7.50, so not insanely expensive. as i was walking towards the ticket machine, a girl came up to me and asked if i had bought my ticket yet. "nope, was about to." she gave me hers. i was pretty surprised.. that was pretty kind of her. so did i do something nice for anyone today? i opened a door for someone.. watched someone's bag for them. does that equate to a parking pass?

i look like a clown..

last thursday i got my grad pictures taken. in the morning i got my hair highlighted and cut. i swear, by the time the hairdresser was done, the amount of hair that gathered on the floor was equivalent to the size of a chihuahua. in the afternoon i went to the mac counter to have someone do my make-up. by the time she was done i felt like a clown. it's been so long since i've worn so much make-up! the only time i wore that much was for performances..

before i even got my pictures taken, this whole prep cost me:
hair - $129
make-up - $40
shirt - $10
total = $179

that's right, i spent $179. so was it all worth it? uh.. not sure.

grad picture proofs (my scanner's acting weird, so the picture quality sucks)

cream cheese

i went to the sens game with my dad tonight. not overly exciting since they were playing philadelphia. well.. the last two minutes was edge-of-your-seat anticipation because the flyers pulled their goalie. no real comments about the game from me other than the sens need to learn how to use their power plays cause they really don't take advantage!

one thing i did find interesting was that some fool came to the game in a leafs jersey. odd considering 1. it's a sens game and 2. they weren't even playing the leafs! he wasn't making much of a statement since the leafs are playing pretty lousy this season and they got their arse whooped by the rangers tonight :)

ah.. so close

last night i was driving home from the bus station. speeding.. as usual. there was a guy following behind me, speeding as well. a police officer pulled him over for speeding. why him and not me? not sure. i have no idea where the cop car came from in the first place because i didn't pass any, and there were none at any of the intersections. it was a marked car because i could see the lights over the car behind me, so i would have noticed it. that was THE closest i've ever come to being caught for speeding. i think i'm going to slow down a little now..

i hate going to my doctor

i've been going to this doctor(B) for about 6 years now, more so for convenience sake. i went to doctor(A) for 15 years previous until she decided to move her practice downtown. a friend who had doctor(A) still goes to her because she says doctor(B) killed her grandmother. i know a few other people who have doctor(B) as their physician and don't really respect her all that much.

today at my internship i suddenly felt dizzy. it's been a while since i've felt a dizziness so bad that it turned my vision blurry for a good minute. my mum picked me up and took me to my doctor. she ordered a blood test.. as usual. and that blood test will surely come back saying my iron is low. surprise, surprise. anyway, i asked my doctor for a note because if i still felt really dizzy by the afternoon that i wouldn't go to my midterm today. she wrote on her prescription pad "i assessed reena in my office today. feb 8/06" she signed it, stamped it. yeah, i can't really give that in to my prof now can i. luckily for me i was only feeling light-headed in the afternoon, so i headed off to my midterm.

reasons for everything

back in november, nortel rented my dad's 'services'. now i understand why. it was part of their plan to establish a joint venture with a chinese company. interesting.
