aunty to baby moment

last month my cousin's wife had a baby, almost seven weeks old now.  babies intimidate me, seriously.  i've only held babies when they're strong enough to support their neck, because then i get to play.  yesterday was the first time i held saraiyah.. agh.  NERVOUS!  if you were a clutz like me.. you'd be nervous too.  we had a little chat, saraiyah and i.  i made sure to inform the kid i would ALWAYS have ice cream in the freezer, which is true.  a freezer without ice cream is an unfortunate way to live.  she seemed to be amused by this because she smiled.  so either she's looking forward to the idea of ice cream or she thinks i'm a crazy aunty..

(side note: yes aunty.  our culture believes your cousins are your siblings, so their kids are your nieces and nephews. :P)

kenny amuses himself

tonight i went to a gujarati speed dating event. why would i do this? why would i subject myself to an awkward social setting that thankfully only lasts 5 minutes per person? my parents that's why. and other people. at least this way i can say i did it, and not be expected/lectured into going again. okay, i'm exaggerating a wee bit. my parents didn't force me to go, however, they keep telling me i need more brown friends (not that they have a problem with my current slew of friends, but they believe having more brown friends would be nice to have).

anyway, i suppose it wasn't a total bust. i met some interesting people and as it usually goes, met someone who happens to know one of my cousins.

during the event i ended up texting random people. yes, horrible etiquette on my part; emily post would totally be offended by my social misdemeanor. however.. i didn't text while i was with someone. so, my cousin panna ripped me apart for waking her up (she lives in england.. oops.) other people i texted included kenny and shea. little did i know they were hanging out together while i was sending messages to the two of them.

nearing the end of the event, they actually found me. i was seriously shocked by this because i only told them what intersection i was at, not where exactly i was! unfortunately, mr. mba is far too smart for my own good. what i didn't realise, was that he actually came up the stairs and waved at me, while shea stood downstairs because he had his bike.

then came the what if scenarios..
  • what if kenny came walking in apologizing for his lateness in getting to the event. hilarious because he's not gujarati, let alone brown.. he's asian.

  • what if kenny came walking up to my table and starting shouting at the last guy i was having a conversation with, "what the *beep* are you doing with my *beeping* girlfriend at this *beeping* hour of the night?! and YOU! you told me you were just going to the store to get a carton of milk.. that was THREE hours ago!"

kenny and shea now want to be notified of the next speed dating event in order to participate. i'm still debating that..

by the way, the hilarity doesn't stop there. no sir. at the end of the event when i was getting my stuff together, my yes/no sheet accidentally hit the flame of a tealight on the table. so there was some flame action going that i was able to put out before it completely destroyed my "sheet of destiny" <-- i couldn't think of a cornier name, so this is what you are stuck with. maybe it's a sign.. :P

you know it's windy when..

yesterday was crazy windy out.  my car door flew open while i was trying to close it, but after a bit of a struggle i was able to slam it shut.  it was when i was reaching for my cellphone i realised..
..
..
..
..
my hair got caught in the door. *slaps forehead*

lucky friday the 13th

i've had an odd day today. it started out decent, with the wonderfulness of lick's for lunch, then the afternoon hit and all went awry. the printer that makes our posters called me to say the posters i needed printed were ready. because we needed the posters, and my boss wasn't able to leave because of a meeting, i needed to head out.

except one problem.. i couldn't find my keys. i had NO idea where my car keys were. in my purse, where i normally keep my keys at work, were only two sets of keys: ottawa keys & toronto keys.. but no car keys :( i started slapping all three sides of my desk thinking it may be buried under the piles of papers and samples scattered everywhere. nothing felt weird. my car keys are missing.. :S i checked my coat jacket, nothing. there's a hole in one of my pockets, so i stuck my hand in all the way to feel around, shook my coat to hear any jingling.. nothing. my car keys are MISSING! my co-worker gave me her car keys so i could check her car to see if they fell on the floor (she drove to lick's). nothing. i ran around my car, twice; checked underneath, nothing. the doors were locked, so it means i walked to my desk with my keys. my CAR keys are MISSING! another co-worker suggested i call lick's to see if they found a set of lost car keys. checked lick's website - they don't list a single phone number.. great. check canada411 and they only list the head office number. called lick's head office - customer service *beep* voicemail.. receptionist *beep* voicemail.. MY CAR KEYS ARE MISSING! i checked my top desk drawer.. holy batman i'm stupid! they were there. i spent twenty minutes looking for my car keys, and they ended up being in the dumbest spot. why in my top desk drawer? i headed to our training centre in the morning and took my safety glasses with me. when i returned, i had both my safety glasses and my keys in hand which i just plomped in the drawer. *slaps forehead*

second thing to happen today? i was walking from the printer to my car with the invoice in hand. and WHOOSH.. it flew away. the invoice for my posters just flew out of my hand! *sigh*

after telling this to my boss, his words of advice, "be VERY careful driving home!" :S well i'm home safe and sound, so these things don't happen in threes. *phew*

ma'am i am not.

i went grocery shopping today.. i found my regular shopping haven! big grocery store, lcbo, beer store, my two banks, ice cream shop, blockbuster.. *wonderful* is it sad i got totally excited when pulling into the shopping area?

i love grocery shopping. it's my favourite shopping activity, hands down. the only part i dislike about the whole shopping experience is trying to open the little baggies for the fruits and veggies.. agh. it always takes me a good five minutes to open it, which by that time the food has already rotted. yes, i'm over exaggerating, but i really get annoyed with those bags. anyway.

at the checkout counter, the cashier was new because she kept asking me what the veggies i was buying were. nice girl, however, she was a bit TOO polite while scanning my items: "ma'am, what is this vegetable? .. ma'am what kind of root is this? .. ma'am.." AAAHHH!!! i'm am not a MA'AM! this is just as bad as the girl at the car dealership calling me mrs. mistry. holy batman, these kids make me feel old.

available only at the gift store

i got home at 5pm today - a good thing since it means i left at 4:30pm today. things have been super crazy at work the past couple of weeks, so i'm taking this whole "leaving on time" business as a sign for an easy going thursday.

on saturday i got to meet up with kelly who made a day trip down to toronto. i got to finally meet her beau, paul! very nice guy and laid back, which totally matches kelly's personality. after lunch at spring rolls (always delicious!), we headed to the rom for some culture and to meet up with one of kelly's university friends, julie.

i like going to museums and galleries for the amusement factor. sure you learn stuff and gain the ability to sound like you're smart and have some class when conversing with others.. but the entertainment value alone of some pieces in the exhibits is well worth the money!

the most entertaining piece from the visit: a wooden statue of a cow giving birth. it was in the permanent egyptian exhibit right when you walk in. julie was very amused by this piece and said she'd love to have something like that at her place just to see peoples' reaction to it. i pointed out that museums have replicas of some pieces for sale at the gift shop.. maybe she'd luck out! unfortunately, i had to leave the museum early since my grandmother was flying back to england that day, so i don't know if julie was lucky enough to find a replica for sale..

air canada - how you confuse me

i booked a plane ticket to fly home to ottawa this weekend since the weatherman predicts snow. not that i don't know how to drive in the snow, but hey if i can find a cheap flight i'd rather save my mileage.

i found flights for $59 one way (leaving early friday morning, returning late sunday evening). considering it's the long weekend, that's a decent deal! so i went through the process of booking. at the very end after submitting the payment info it spits out, "the price has changed." instead of a total cost of $172, it jumped to $260. ack! how'd that happen?!

i called air canada and the lady on the other end kindly informed me that the number of tickets at the cheap price, for the return flight i was looking at, sold out. so instead of $59, it's now $142. bah.

the price for the a return flight that leaves an hour later was $79, so i decided to go with that. again, after i submitted the payment information i get a message "the price has changed".. *grumble* how could this happen again?! then i read the total price.. instead of $193, the total was changed to $172. so while i was booking, the price for the return flight bumped down to $59. URGH.. hooray for price changes, but horrible on the nerves because you have to go through the payment process again in order to secure a seat, and you have no idea how many other people are trying to book that flight at the same time as you. luckily it went through this time around.

SO excited!! i haven't been home in a long while, so it'll be nice to see people!
